Do-It-Yourself Learn-to-Float and Learn to Swim!
There’s one thing that’s prevented you from learning to float: not feeling safe. If you felt safe, what could you do? What would you try? With the Tether on, you’re always within arm’s reach of your mooring. The Tether with the instructions in the book make you feel safe.
Have fun slowing down in the water and feeling what’s actually happening: it holds you up! There are other things you need to know, such as how to happily put your face in water. That’s in the book, too. If you use this kit as directed, you cannot possibly fail to learn to float. Or swim. No pushing, coaxing, or disappointment. The system works infallibly. Learning to float–or how to manage if you’re one of few people who don’t float–is an essential step of learning to swim. After a few lessons with the Tether, you’ll derive your safety from yourself, not from the Tether, Float Bar or railing. When you feel safe, you experience what’s true about water and deep water. It holds you up.

How to Succeed
The book gives you every single step of learning to swim. This does not extend to strokes, which are about swimming efficiently.
Good floats are demonstrated by the student photos above. The diagonal float is normal for someone with lean legs. A horizontal float is just as good. You’re in good company: 149 million adults in the U.S. are afraid in deep water.
To use the Tether: the long strap goes around your waist. One strap connects to the Float Bar, pool ladder or railing. One strap extends or shortens your distance from the Float Bar. Color coded connectors make connections simple. As you follow the instructions and become more confident, expand the Tether to float further away. Pipes fill with water, keeping Float Bar on the floor. Float Bar immediately drains while being removed from pool.

You’ll need a rubber mallet to assemble the Float Bar.
The belt of the tether should be the length that most closely fits your waist. If you would like the option of having extra length to be further from the float bar or wall, buy an extra extender. The extra extender, up to four feet long in addition to the three foot extender that comes with the kit, is $9.95. It is not advisable to order the longest belt to accomplish this, as you would need more hardware on the belt to make it work correctly.
1. Why do I need the book, DVD, and podcast?
You need the book (and tether). You don’t need the DVD and podcast, though they add to your overall understanding and comfort. Much common knowledge about learning to swim is incorrect. If you use common knowledge, it’s likely that you’ll follow traditional thinking, skip steps, and become discouraged. At Miracle Swimming, steps are not skipped and success is ensured. Our book, DVD, and podcast teach you how to learn, feeling safe all the time. No more panic. The urgency to learn is understandable. However, it’s best to start at the beginning. The book provides every single step an adult needs to learn to swim, from fear in shallow water to freedom in deep water. It doesn’t include strokes—which make swimming efficient but not safe—because strokes are not relevant to overcoming fear. The DVD shows the introduction to a real course with actual students learning for the first time and the first teachings: the 5 Circles, lessons of learning to put your face in and the back float. Follow students’ progress over an 8-week / 24 hour course including their first lessons in the deep end. You will see excerpts of two Miracle Swimming courses in action.
Listen to the podcast or read the first 60 pages of the book to get started. Or watch the DVD before you get into the pool. Read the whole book to learn to swim comfortably in the shallow and deep. You can learn to swim safely in deep water fully with the book, tether, and a pool with a ladder or rail or the Float Bar.
2. Your belly should not touch the Float Bar when you float on your back. If it does, put the Float Bar in shallower water. Or, make your Float Bar taller.
How can you know in advance if your belly will touch it?
If you’re fairly lean, you will most likely float at a diagonal and your feet will be on the floor, belly below the surface and the Bar.
If the top bar of the Float Bar is in 40 inches of water and you’re not as lean, your belly may touch the Float Bar because you may float horizontally. Just move the bar to shallower water.
