What Is the Course?

Become comfortable in every corner of the pool, top and bottom, upside down and right side up. Learn to change directions, be still at the bottom, maneuver at will.

Master your nose. Spend so much time in deep water that it feels like home.

When you’ve mastered your safety in the deep end in the Essentials 2 course and you can “hang out” there as long as you want, there’s another level of competency to win: proficiency.

Gain control of doing exactly what you want, when you want to do it. Learn to use the water and your body to pick up the keys you dropped in the deep, find a nose clip, play games, do stunts. The combination of this course plus Jump Off the Boat often produces a class of graduates who can tread water for half an hour in the ocean: they have gotten to know the water and are free.

Who Takes Deep Water Play?

After you can rest peacefully in water over your head, you may wish to become proficient in deep water.

To be eligible, when you arrive you must be able to jump into the deep end and be peaceful in the middle of deep water in a pool for at least 10 minutes and a graduate of our Essentials 1 (formerly Beginning) course. Most likely you’ll also be a graduate of the Essentials 2 (formerly Next Step) course. It’s okay to re-take Essentials 2 to get ready. Or, reach comfort on your own with with a Tether.

This third course in our series brings you to freedom in any pool, completing our series to achieve Pool Competency. There is so much to learn that many people take this course multiple times, each time becoming more one with water.

Brick

If you wish to play with a brick on your own before Deep Water Play or any of our courses, get a brick, BrickHandle, and tether. However, it’s not required or expected.
